Help

From a blank page to a shared link, in one sitting.

Formwell is a document-style form builder. You write the questions the way you would write them down, set the rules that make them behave, publish one link, and read every answer in the results view for that form. Every step on this page is on the free plan: writing the questions, publishing the link and reading the answers never ask for a card.

The whole journey

Four steps, in this order

  1. Write the questions. Open the editor and add a block for each thing you need to know: short answer, long answer, email, number, pick one, pick any, rating or date. Each block takes a question, an optional line of help text and a required switch.
  2. Set the rules. A logic rule watches one answer and shows, hides or makes another question required when it matches. A calculation totals, averages or counts the number answers you pick for it.
  3. Publish the link. Publishing runs its checks on the title, the questions, the options and the rules, then gives the form one shareable link a respondent opens in a browser.
  4. Read the answers. Each submission is stored against the form and appears in its results view, where the share link sits beside the responses.

How to

Create it, shape it, publish it

Creating a form

  • Start on the editor page and add your first block; a form with no questions cannot be published.
  • Write the title first — it is the one thing publishing insists on before anything else.
  • Give every question a label in the words you would use out loud.
  • Switch on required for the questions you cannot do without.
  • In a hurry? Describe the form in a sentence and the assistant drafts a short list of questions; they land in the editor and you edit the wording from there.

Shaping the questions

  • Pick-one and pick-any questions take their own list of options; at least two need wording.
  • A rule compares one answer using is, is not, contains, is empty, greater than or less than, and then shows, hides or requires a later question.
  • Calculations read only the number and rating answers you choose: total them, average them, or count them.
  • Help text under a question carries the caveat you would otherwise say out loud.
  • The preview under the questions shows what a respondent will see, before you publish.

Publishing and sharing

  • Publishing checks the title, every label, the choice options, and that each rule and calculation still points at a question that exists.
  • If publishing stops, the editor says which question is holding it back and takes you to it: a missing title, an unlabelled question, a choice question with fewer than two worded options, or a rule pointing at a question you removed.
  • The form then lives at one link, /f/<form id>, on this address.
  • Send the link however you like; whoever opens it answers the questions and submits once.
  • Change the wording later and publish again — the link stays the same and the responses already collected stay with the form.
  • Take a form down again when you need the room for another one; its answers stay with it, and publishing it again brings the same link back.

The respondent’s side

What the person opening the link meets

Only the questions that apply

  • A question behind a rule stays out of the way until an answer calls for it.
  • A required question has to be answered before the form can be sent — but only while it is visible, and only while the rule that requires it matches.
  • The running total from your calculations is shown under the questions, not hidden away.

A plain reason to fix an answer

  • A required question left blank holds the form back until it is answered.
  • An email address that does not look like an address is marked at the field.
  • A number question holding something that is not a number is marked the same way.
  • A choice that is not on the list is refused, and the respondent is told what to pick from.
Where the answer lands.Every submission appears in the results view for that form — /forms/<form id>/results — beside the form’s share link, and the page reads the list again while it stays open, so a fresh answer never sits unseen.

Plans and billing

What stays free, and what a plan carries

Building, publishing and collecting responses are on the free plan for as long as you need them. Your forms keep the link they already have whatever you decide about a plan.

What each plan carries

The allowances your account carries — how many forms stay published at once, and how many responses a form takes each month — are read from the account on the pricing page, so the numbers there are always the ones you actually get.
